3G Development in China February 8-14

- ST-Ericsson announced on February 11 that Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC will embrace its TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Dvision Multiple Access) platform for Smartphones, according to a press release by ST-Ericsson on February 11. HTC and ST-Ericsson have been collaborating in the development of high-end and low-cost mobile phones. The first mobile phone model jointly launched by these two companies was launched in December 2009. The duo also revealed that the mobile phones, to be developed through their collaboration, will be based on new and existing platforms from ST-Ericsson, such as the M7210, which comes with dual-mode automatic handover between TD-HSPA (TD-High Speed Packet Access) and EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) capabilities.

 

- Chinese telecom operator China Mobile recently announced that the company will accelerate the development of its mobile network based on 4G technology, the SinaCast Daily Business Beat News reported on February 11. Further details of the plan, however, were not yet disclosed. Nevertheless, China Mobil announced in mid-January that the company would deploy a 4G network for the World Expo 2010, to be held in Shanghai in May 2010, and launch 4G trials during the period between May and October 2010, according to the same source.
